Police in Bushenyi District are investigating circumstances surrounding a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the lives of four people along the Bushenyi–Mbarara highway in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The crash occurred at around 2:00 a.m. near Peak Hotel when a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UMA 992CA, was reportedly knocked by a yet-to-be-identified motor vehicle.
Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, said preliminary investigations indicate that all four occupants of the motorcycle died on the spot. The victims include three males and one female.
He said the unidentified vehicle rammed into the motorcycle before its driver fled the scene immediately after the collision.
The bodies of the deceased, who are yet to be formally identified, were conveyed to KIU Teaching Hospital Ishaka mortuary pending postmortem examinations to establish the exact cause of death as required by law.
SP Tayebwa said investigations are ongoing to trace the suspect driver and appealed to the public for any information that may aid the inquiry.
He urged anyone with knowledge about the incident or the whereabouts of the suspected driver to discreetly report to Bushenyi Police to help ensure justice for the victims and their families.
Police suspect reckless driving to have been the cause of the crash.
The traffic department has once again cautioned motorists and other road users to strictly observe traffic rules and regulations to prevent avoidable loss of life on the roads.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
